Discovering “Koki-bori,” the Lacquer Carving Art of Kagawa

✨ A Story of Time, Color, and Patience

From November 1st to 3rd, we joined a lacquer carving workshop led by Tefutefu, a skilled urushi artisan.
This hands-on session featured “Koki-bori,” a traditional carving technique from Kagawa Prefecture, passed down through generations.

The table was filled with small plates coated in vivid layers of red, blue, yellow, and green lacquer.
Over time, their colors subtly change—each plate breathing with a life of its own.

“This one has about five layers of lacquer,” explained Tefutefu.
Each layer takes half a day to dry, and since lacquer can cause skin irritation, artisans work through the itch for the sake of beauty.
That dedication alone is artistry.

🪶 From Design to Carving: The Moment of Focus

We began by transferring our chosen designs—either pre-made or our own—onto the plate.
One careful press, and the pattern appeared like magic.

Then came the carving. Using a special flat knife called Kinmaken, we practiced the motion: pushing, pressing, adjusting the pressure.
It felt tricky at first, but under Tefutefu’s patient guidance, the rhythm came naturally.

🎨 Carve with Your Heart, Reveal Hidden Colors

Because the lacquer is layered, a deeper carve reveals white, while a lighter touch brings out ivory tones.

Every stroke changes the plate’s mood, just like painting with depth instead of pigment.
The sound of carving, the fine dust falling away—it’s meditative, calming, and deeply satisfying.

📸 Smiles at the Finish Line

When the plates were finished, participants smiled brightly, saying:
“It turned out better than I imagined!” and “I want to try a different color next time!”
Each piece became a reflection of its maker—a personal treasure shaped by hand and heart.

💬 The Beauty of Craft, The Joy of Experience

This lacquer carving workshop wasn’t only about making art;
it was about feeling the artisan’s soul through each cut and curve.
A timeless encounter with Japanese beauty, etched forever in lacquer.
